Sodium Benzoate is widely used as a preservative for cosmetics pharmaceutical and food/beverage formulations. Benzoic acid or NaC7H5O2 is considered to be primarily an anti-fungal but also shows some activity against bacteria.
It is the sodium salt of benzoic acid and exists in the form of white powder/granular solid and is water soluble. Often combined with Potassium Sorbate in low pH products it provides a synergistic preservative effect against yeast and mould.
